CMA Honors 15 Triple Play Awards Recipients During Industry Luncheon

NASHVILLE—The Country Music Association presented its ninth annual Triple Play Awards Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 20, during a private industry luncheon at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works, awarding songwriters who have penned three No. 1 songs within a 12-month period based on the Country Aircheck, Billboard Country Airplay and Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Hosted by Troy Tomlinson, Sony/ATV Music Publishing President and CEO and CMA Board member, trophies were handed out to 15 songwriters this year: Rhett Akins, Ross Copperman, Zach Crowell, Jesse Frasure, Ashley Gorley, Ben Hayslip, Sam Hunt, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne, Matthew Ramsey, Thomas Rhett, Trevor Rosen, Brad Tursi, Brad Warren and Brett Warren.

Gorley received three trophies in recognition of nine No. 1 songs, bringing his all-time total to eleven Triple Play Awards and making him the most-awarded Triple Play Awards recipient of all time. McAnally received two trophies in recognition of his six No. 1 songs. Thomas Rhett received his first-ever Triple Play Award this year; his father, Akins, was also a recipient this year, marking the first time a father and son received Triple Play Awards in a single year. Throughout the ceremony, videos recorded by each songwriter played before each award was presented, ranging from heartfelt congratulations to hilarious skits. A special CMA Songwriters Series show presented by U.S. Bank—featuring Copperman, McAnally and The Warren Brothers—took place Tuesday evening following the Triple Play Awards luncheon. McAnally hosted the event and the four songwriters performed several of their hits including the 2014 CMA Song of the Year “Follow Your Arrow,” 2013 CMA Song of the Year nominated “Mama’s Broken Heart,” 2015 CMA Song of the Year nominated “American Kids” and 2017 CMA Song of the Year nominated “Body Like A Backroad,” all while entertaining a packed house of hundreds of audience members with never-before-heard stories about how the songs came to be and how the songwriters met each other for the first time.
