John Anderson, one of Country Music’s most respected performers and recording artists, known for his keen eye for song material, passed away today, Wednesday, Oct. 21. He was 71.

Throughout his career, Anderson has received three CMA Awards, including the coveted Horizon Award in 1983. He also was awarded Single of the Year in 1983 for “Swingin’” and Album of the Year in 1994 for the multi-artist project Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles. Anderson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.

“Heartbroken is an understatement. John’s music came to prominence in the ’80s when I was in college, and one of my dear friends from Florida sang his songs all the time. John’s voice became part of the soundtrack of those years, and I felt like I had grown up with him. I had the privilege of a long conversation with him just this past Sunday night, and I’m so grateful for that time. My heart is with his family tonight.”  — Sarah Trahern, Country Music Association CEO
